John PIPER Redenhall, Norfolk - The Tower  (1964)
Original lithograph in colours printed on wove paper from the portfolio of 24 prints A Retrospect of Churches. Signed John Piper lower right in pencil and numbered from the limited edition of 70. Printed by Curwen Studio and published by Marlborough Fine Art, London. Referenced in Levinson, 124.
Very good condition with barely visible discolouration at the far sheet edges. Right hand edge has been cut slightly unevenly, possibly done at time of printing.
A beautiful, elegant John Piper print from his famous portfolio of Churches made in 1963/64 - at a sensible price.
Piper likes to show what time does to churches and the effect of lichens on country churches and smoke on town ones and decay on both. He responds to Renaissance monuments and to the mighty bulk of Hawksmoor’s East London churches which were built for post-Reformation merchants and sea-captains in days of growing commercial prosperity. Extract from the portfolio forward by John Betjeman
