Bridget RILEY Untitled, from Rothko Portfolio  (1973)
Original screenprint in three colours on Aquarelle Arches Satine wove paper from The Rothko Memorial Portfolio. Signed and dated in pencil, an artist's proof aside from the limited edition of 75 (the artist apparently kept number 1/75 for herself). Published by the Mark Rothko Memorial Trust, London, and Propyläen Verlag, Berlin and printed by Kelpra Studio, London in 1973. Image size: 553mm x 771mm. Referenced in Schubert, 19 and Tommasini-Gubay, 20. With the original cover sheet and a letter of provenance from the Rothko Memorial Trust to the previous (first) owner.
In very good condition and never framed, a barely-visible tiny blemish to the paper towards the top left sheet edge (visible on 3rd photo opposite), but perfectly suitable for float-framing if desired. A hugely collectable large, beautiful and immediately recognisable Op Art signed print by Bridget Riley.
Shortly after Mark Rothko’s tragic death in 1970, the art writer, lecturer and broadcaster Bryan Robertson gathered together artists who had known Rothko and held him in high regard, proposing that something should be done to honour his life and work. As a result the Mark Rothko Memorial Trust was established in 1973 to raise money to enable artists working in the UK to travel to the US. The portfolio contains thirteen prints by thirteen artists: Patrick Caulfield, Merlyn Evans, Adrian Heath, Patrick Heron, John Hoyland, John Hubbard, Paul Huxley, Allen Jones, Henry Moore, Victor Pasmore, Bridget Riley, William Scott and Richard Smith.
